About Western Kentucky University

Western Kentucky University, or WKU for short, is a public university located in Bowling Green, which is the 4th most populated city in the US state of Kentucky, after Owensboro, Lexington and Louisville, having a population estimated at a number of more than 55 000 inhabitants, during the 2008 census. It is also the county seat of Warren County, and the principal city of the Bowling Green, Kentucky Metropolitan Statistical Area, which has more than 116 000 people, living within its limits.

WKU’s history started long before it was founded by the Commonwealth of Kentucky, in 1906, back in 1875, when the Glasgow Normal School was founded in Glasgow, KY, which was moved to Bowling Green in 1884 and renamed Southern Normal School and Business College. In 1922, the institution was renamed once again, becoming Western Kentucky State Normal School and Teachers College. The university had its name changed several times since then, until 1966, when it finally adopted its current name, which was changed from Western Kentucky State College (given in 1948).

Today, WKU has an enrollment of approximately 21 000 students to whom it offers undergraduate and graduate minors and majors, including 17 associate degree programs and 5 certificate programs, through 6 undergraduate colleges and one Graduate School, which is now the Office of Graduate Studies and Research. The university is home to the largest American master’s degree program in folklore, contained within the Department of Folk Studies and Anthropology, being one of the few schools in the state of Kentucky to offer a focus in historic preservation.

The athletic teams from WKU are known as the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers, (having Big Red as their mascot), who compete in the Sun Belt Conference since 1982, the university being formerly a member of the Ohio Valley Conference (1948-1982). The Hilltoppers are perhaps best known for their achievements in men’s basketball and women’s basketball, in which they’ve experienced most of their victories. The men’s basketball team has recorded the 16th most numerous victories in the NCAA, appearing in the NCAA Tournament 21 times, while the women’s basketball team has made 3 NCAA Final Four appearances, the most recent appearance being in 2008.

The list of notable WKU alumni contains resonant names such as Craig Dezern - vice president for global public relations, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, Michael Rosenbaum – actor (Lex Luthor from `Smallville`), Cordell Hull - Secretary of State under FDR, Nobel Peace Prize winner, Crystal Kelly - WNBA player, Terrence W. Wilcutt - United States astronaut, Harry Barkus Gray - American chemist, as well as several other people, who have made themselves notable, in various fields, after graduation.
